UNIT MOLD VS. SELF CONTAINED MOLD

What does this mean?

When quoting new mold construction, Steinwall will either quote a self contained mold base or a unit mold. Many times a M.U.D. mold is suggested by our customers. Master Unit Die Corporation (M.U.D.) produces unit molds ready for mold makers to purchase. When a unit mold is quoted, Steinwall will either build the unit mold in-house or purchase it from a supplier, such as M.U.D.

A very attractive advantage to a unit mold is the lower initial mold investment. The customer does not need to invest in a mold base. A unit is only the cavity, core and ejection system needed to produce a specific part. The mold base is typically owned by the molder and the cost is shared by several customers.

A customer should consider the risks in using a unit mold. However, if Steinwall has quoted a unit mold, the risks are very minor.

Advantages of a Unit Mold

  1. Lower initial mold cost.
  2. Less time spent in setting the mold into press if mold base is already in place.

Disadvantages to a Unit Mold

  1. Could have a longer runner, more waste or longer cycle.
  2. Some part designs do not lend themselves to standard unit sizes.
  3. Scheduling part production is less flexible if only one mold base is available for several parts.
  4. Not easily transferred from one molder to another.
